Project backgroundThe Consortium partners holds the view that environmental awareness will be a dominating force of change in the global economy, both in the short and long run. Therefore, contributing towards the development of more environmentally friendly and economically efficient transport operations will benefit both the society and the transport industry at large. SHIFT aims to pave the way for successful new short sea shipping business initiatives that will shift cargo from land to sea and strengthen the competitive position of short sea shipping in intermodal transport chains. For operators and ship-owners this may mean new or increased business, for cargo owners’ lower transport cost and/or access to more environmental friendly transport chains.
Main Activities
- Justification of why cargo shifts from road to sea transport have been largely absent, despite many efforts to make that happen
- Identification of types of goods especially suited for a shift from road to sea transport for selected transport corridors, as well as their potential in volume.
- Description of the environmental profile of various transport chains to document why more use of short sea shipping can lead to more sustainable transport solutions.
- Identification of the necessary commercial and operational conditions that can generate cargo shift from road to sea.
- Development of targeted operational solutions for increasing the use of sea transport services on a case by case basis.
- Specification of policy recommendations for supporting the development of more sustainable transport networks.
